New Music from So Many Wizards

LA-based So Many Wizards are releasing their debut record, Warm Nothing, on boutique label JAXART. The band is part of the vibrant Los Angeles DIY music scene, rooted at all-ages venues like The Smell and Pehrspace. After releasing two EPs and a 7" that received attention from Pitchfork, Aquarium Drunkard, and Filter Magazine, the group went to work on what would become the 13 songs that would make up their debut LP. What was once a solo "bedroom pop" project has now evolved into what singer/guitarist Nima Kazerouni calls "dream punk" — jangly, anxiously strummed guitar, ethereal keyboard layers, and whimsical guitar riffs. Musically, Kazerouni's beach city upbringing is prevalent on the record, but it's the undercurrent of tension that gives the songs their unique sound — something that could be attributed to his experience crossing multiple continents from war torn Iran to arrive in Southern California as a young child. Tracks like "Lose Your Mind" show the singer letting go of his chaotic adolescence with its driving beat and buoyant guitar. Opening song "Never Wake Up" offers a breezy melody all under a foggy haze and "Sleepwalk" channels Ariel Pink's playfulness, ghostly back-up vocals, and AM-radio tinged tones. "Inner City" takes youthful imagination to the extreme and mixes in pounding campfire drums, dizzying guitars, and infectious verses. For this release, websites like Stereogum, Impose, and Dummy Magazine have joined in on the conversation and celebrated the band's freshman release. See for yourself and fall into the magnetic, gauzy cloud of Warm Nothing.
