New Music From Kathryn Calder

Kathryn Calder (The New Pornographers) has returned with her first album since 2011. The self-titled record is Calder’s third solo album & represents her transition from a songwriter reacting to the world to a self-aware artist capturing her own moments and creating her own worlds. Calder developed the ten songs from atmospheres she crafted in the producer’s chair of her Vancouver Island studio her husband and co-producer Colin Stewart built.  Channeling Brian Eno and other early synth pioneers, Kathryn Calder begins not with lyrics or melody, but raw creation. Accompanying her on the record are two-time JUNO Award winner Dan Mangan, Jill Barber, and Hannah Georgas, among others.

Kathryn Calder balances elements of classical and pop music, juxtaposing soft and sweet moments like the ethereal, expansive opener “Slow Burning,” the delicately orchestrated “Beach,” and the pensive “Song in Cm” with the get-up-and-move aesthetic found on lead single “Take a Little Time,” the cacophony of “When You See My Blood,” and the rolling fluidity of “My Armour.” Packed with instrumental and melodic surprises, the whole thing is held together and guided by Calder‘s confident, warm, and deeply personal vocals.

“[‘Take a Little Time’ is] an expansive, dreamy track that’s charged with emotion, moving through the weight of loss and building to an effusive climax that seems to simulate the eventual freedom of letting go.”
-Stereogum

“Though she’s now one of the key players…in overstaffed power-pop collective the New Pornographers, Kathryn Calder is best heard in solo mode.”
-Spin
