Kathryn Calder Going for Adds

Kathryn Calder, the eponymous new solo album from the New Pornographers member, pairs the singer’s gorgeous vocal delivery with electronic soundscapes inspired by Brian Eno and other early synth pioneers. Packed with instrumental and melodic surprises, the album balances elements of classical and pop music while further exploring the poignant, ruminative lyrical themes found on her previous albums Are You My Mother? and Bright and Vivid. While those albums captured her immediate reactions to the deaths of her mother and father, respectively, her third album represents her transition from a songwriter reacting to the world to a self-aware artist capturing her own moments and creating her own worlds. The album was co-produced by Calder and her husband Colin Stewart at Stewart’s Vancouver Island studio and features contributions by musicians including two-time JUNO Award winner Dan Mangan, Jill Barber, and Hannah Georgas.

“Though she’s now one of the key players…in overstaffed power-pop collective the New Pornographers, Kathryn Calder is best heard in solo mode.”
