New Music From Sam Cohen

After years fronting Apollo Sunshine and the Yellowbirds, Sam Cohen took the idea of a “solo album” to heart with his first offering under his own name, Cool It. The multi-instrumentalist, who has worked with a diverse array of musicians including the National, Norah Jones, Cee-Lo and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, self-recorded an album of lush, psychedelic songs on which he plays almost every instrument.

“I started to hear what I sound like, so I became Sam Cohen”, he says, explaining the inspiration behind a record that is “mostly just me alone in a room, playing guitars, drums, bass, synths, singing, recording in both haphazard and elaborate methods.” He has a knack for seamlessly blending disparate timbres, mixing folky restraint, pop melodicism, guitar freakouts, and synthy prog-rock excursions on standouts such as “Pretty Lights,” “Last Dream,” and “Kepler 62″. Cool It has a relaxed vibe, and according to Pitchfork, is “a record that can transport you to a hazy weekend afternoon in the summer”. Under his consistently calm vocals and lyrics, Cohen’s thoughtful arrangements and prowess as a player give the collection the heft and complexity to invite repeated listens.

Sam Cohen has been making our day for over a decade now…, and his vocals show an impressive range in delivery that could only have been won after years of performance and recording experience.”
