Sam Cohen is a multi-faceted multi-instrumentalist whose credits include everything from acting as musical director for the Complete Last Waltz live shows to collaborating with Norah Jones. On Cool it, his first album under his own name after a combined decade fronting former bands Apollo Sunshine and the Yellowbirds, Cohen took the idea of a “solo album” to heart by recording and performing almost every instrumental part by himself.
His diverse experience has given him a knack for seamlessly blending disparate timbres, mixing folky restraint, pop melodicism, guitar freakouts, and synthy prog-rock excursions on standouts such as “Pretty Lights”, “Last Dream”, and “Kepler 62″. Cool It has a relaxed vibe, and according to Pitchfork, is “a record that can transport you to a hazy weekend afternoon in the summer”. Under his consistently calm vocals and lyrics, Cohen’s thoughtful arrangements and prowess as a player give the collection the heft and complexity to invite repeated listens.
“There is no doubting the songwriting or producing abilities that lie within… tracks that are warm, ambient, edgy and poetic. Listening to the album you can tell that every detail, every little sound, has its own purpose and has been carefully placed to make each track whole”.
