New Music from Alpine

Yuck, the new album from Australian indie pop six-piece Alpine, comes after three years of performing to a growing international fan base, staring out of windows in tour vans or on long-haul flights, saving up, moving in, breaking up, and enjoying tipsy late nights in different parts of the world. Guitarist and co-producer Christian O’Brien says the album, the follow up to 2012’s A is For Alpine, was inspired by the desire to go in new and often weird places, “to see if certain things would work in a ‘pop’ song.”

Though the band has been praised by the likes of Pitchfork for its “unforgettably light” quality, NPR’s First Listen has noted that “[Yuck’s] blithe sound can’t quite mask the doubt and hesitation at the heart of the songs.” Co-singers Phoebe Baker and Lou James sing lyrics that explore their “yuck” reactions to first world problems like plastic vanity, distasteful romance, and foolish attraction. “Foolish” and “Damn Baby” deal with relationship ambivalence, while “Shot Fox,” the singers turn inward to worry about spending “too much time looking in my head.” Contrasted with the music’s delightfully bright sound, these ruminations give Yuck an alluring and substantial depth.

“Alpine craft pop songs with manicured precision, nudging every sound into exactly the right place.”
– Stereogum

“Pop music shot through with style, with grace, with a sense of elegance.”
– Clash Music
