Gary Clark Jr. Looks For Strong Debut, Issues “The Healing” Video, Is Reviewed by Rolling Stone

Gary Clark, Jr. is hoping for a strong debut this week on the CMJ Radio 200 for his sophomore album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. His debut, Blak and Blu, was a Top 10 CMJ record back in 2012, and Sonny Boy Slim takes his sound in bold new directions. Now he’s released a video for lead single “The Healing.” Rolling Stone has the “the sumptuously shot, Gaston Jouany-directed” here, but you can watch it below.

Rolling Stone also has a review of the album, here, which describes it thusly: “Clark carves out a Prince-ly room of his own with wah-wah-washed acid rock and ping-ponging, Bootsy-tinted funk. There’s also the rap-cadence soul of “Hold On,” with echoes of Marvin Gaye and Kanye West; the deep groove of “Wings,” a slinky duet with Austin singer Tameca Jones; and “Church,” a stripped-down folk meditation à la Taj Mahal that unpacks the drama behind one man’s prayers.” Throughout, writes Will Hermes, “The playing never stumbles.” We’re looking for Gary Clark Jr. to take off at your station this week!
