Stereogum and CoS Share Devendra Banhart’s “Middle Names”

Stereogum premiered Devendra Banhart‘s “Middle Names,” the first song on his new LP Ape In Pink Marble, this summer in advance of the album’s release. As described by the site, the song “is a hushed, simple, pretty song… It shows Banhart at his most restrained — no scraggly falsetto howls, no surrealist nature imagery, just a restrained and meditative arrangement and delivery and some lyrics about running into a past love at a Walgreen’s.” Listen to the single right here.

Consequence of Sound picked up the track after Stereogum’s premiere, writing in a feature that “Middle Names” is “a sweet yet sad affair, gentle plucks of acoustic guitar dropping like rain from a gutter as wind blows in the background.” Check out that review here and give the whole LP a listen if you haven’t already!
