The Georgia Straight Praises Overcoats’ “Personal” and “Empowering” Debut LP

The Georgia Straight starts a recent feature on Overcoats by favorably comparing the duo to Beth Orton, Four Tet, and Caribou. “Overcoats isn’t the first act to happen on the idea of fusing forward-thinking folk with chill-city electronic music,” the site contends, “but what sets… Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell apart from those builders is a determination to be something more than (admittedly beautiful) aural wallpaper.” The Straight writes that on Young, the group’s debut, the band at times “has one foot planted in the golden era of Ninja Tune and the other in ’80s-edition Motown,” while other moments find the duo “roaring headfirst into the future.” The album’s lyrics are also deeply personal and vulnerable, meaning that “the ultimate brilliance of Young, then, is that Mitchell and Elion aren’t afraid to put themselves out there emotionally.”
