Ani Difranco Talks To Wicked Local

In a recent interview with Wicked Local, veteran musician and feminist icon Ani Difranco discussed the inspiration behind her new album’s title. “We need to leave our houses and apartments, our yurts and farms, and go get together,” she told the magazine. “The trap these days is to think you can stay passive and isolated looking at a screen and really effect change. We can use technology to propel social movements, but nothing propels those movements like going and making a relationship. Then you’ve built a ‘binary,’ a resonant loop of energy and positivity. One day you’re doing a project with a friend, then ten years later they’re running some advanced institute. You reconnect. Both of your powers have grown. That’s how you get stronger. It all starts with the willingness to get out there.” According to Difranco, “Binary is one of my best albums because of all the collaborators I had. I’ve made a lot of records in versions of solitary. This time I had amazing musicians, and it was the first time I hired someone to mix my records. Wow, it’s a good idea.” Read the whole interview, which was conducted in advance of Difranco’s Babefest concert in Provincetown, MA, right here.

The album is a stunning addition to Difranco’s already-robust catalogue and just made its NACC 200 debut last week. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please give it a review! Stream the album on Apple Music or Spotify below.
