Dagger Beach, the new record from San Francisco songwriter John Vanderslice, arrives as his first self-released effort after releasing records through Dead Oceans and Barsuk. It delivers the same precise and carefully thought out sonics we know him for while moving with a deft lightness and fearless sense of exploration. During the early stages of writing, Vanderslice endured a break-up that indirectly inspired the record. It was not the heartache that yielded the songs on Dagger Beach, but the solitary hikes into the deep Northern California wilderness that came out of being left to himself. Surviving such drastic life shifts ultimately becomes liberating, and a sense of that is heard throughout the songs looser, weirder, and freer sound. Lead single, “Raw Wood”, exemplifies that with syncopated drums, fluttering piano chords and eerie back-up melodies that gently moves the song into Grizzly Bear territory. Check out the Rolling Stone premiere of “Raw Wood” here and download it below as it adds this Tuesday.

Nonesuch Records releases Sam Amidon’s label debut Bright Sunny South this Tuesday. Bright Sunny South follows 2010’s critically acclaimed I See the Sign, which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his “quirky alchemy…contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents”. Amidon describes his new collection of work as “a lonesome record” and a return to the more spare sound of his 2007 self-recorded debut, But this Chicken Proved Falsehearted that welcomed the listener into an intimate, personal space. His new album is self-described as “a journey, a winding path. The band comes rushing in and then they disappear. It comes from more of a darker, internal space.” In the forefront, is Amidon‘s sure yet frangible voice, hovering in a high register and as its accompanied instrumentation flows just below it. The movements on Bright Sunny South are gradual because they’re contemplative, yet the musical performances are raw. “It was very much a process of discovery for the both of us. At that point, the final take was the one where I was able to get all the way through without messing the guitar part up.” This counterbalance makes those rare occasions of accelerated instrumentation & unedited honesty all the more exhilarating. On “I Wish I Wish”, snare and piano chords are occasionally placed in off-beat moments, giving the song an eccentricity that separates it from traditional indie folk. Lead single “My Old Friend” is a nod to Amidon‘s American roots with “sun-warmed…acoustic guitar, capo’d high to give it a twinkling quality, edged by small cirrus clouds of electric lead”. Pitchfork premiered the track earlier this year and is featuring the album for stream here on Pitchfork Advance. Now married with English artist Beth Orton and a father of one, Bright Sunny South is a patchwork portrait of the Vermont-born and raised, London-based Amidon himself, with each of these tunes representing a facet of the singer and multi-instrumentalist’s own history, his memories, his travels, and his discoveries.

Anchoress is a four piece hardcore punk band hailing from Vancouver, BC whose sharp wit only cuts deeper when grouped with their frenetic sonic attack. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Trash Talk and Guttermouth and their sound takes from 80’s hardcore, old school punk, and powerviolence – making for a collection of furious explosions, relentless intensity, and choral screams many now associate with F*cked Up. Their new album, Set Sail, immediately grabs you by the collar and drags into the circle of their assault without your discretion. Album opener “Murder In the Sky Over Burnaby” begins with a thunderous eruption of distorted guitar and booming drums. Vocalist Rob Hoover strains his vocals with guttural screams of “Murder…”, setting the tone for the twenty-two minutes of flurry that is to follow. “Coral Bones” has references to the post-hardcore of the past twenty-five years & “Foul Bay” starts abrasively then breaks down to Hoover at the end of his rope encouraging, “When I’m gone, then you must be brave” before we’re hit once more w/ waves of distortion. On the penultimate song of the album, “Brooks Was Here”, the group pulls back the intensity a notch and drives through a chugging bridge to provide one of the album’s standout tracks. Set Sail is being serviced in the middle of a North American tour where they’re bringing their unhinged live show to the states.
