Purge, the new album from Cloudeater, is the group’s most impressive work to date as they continue to create music that pulls from the diverse cultural landscape of their Atlanta, GA hometown. With driving rhythms, fuzzy guitar, and atmospheric synths – Purge transcends a singular genre to create a sound reminiscent of several styles including trip-hop, post-rock, and prog rock. Formed in 2009, Cloudeater released two previous EPs, performed at SXSW 2013 and collaborated with artists such as Washington D.C.’s Wale. After two back-to-back EPs, Cloudeater decided to let Purge take form organically with each member sharing their respective influences such as Portishead, Massive Attack, and The Flaming Lips. In this time, the handful of tracks they created found their way onto the lap of producer Guillermo Scott Herren aka Prefuse 73 (Warp Records). Impressed by their one of a kind aesthetic, Herren thoughtfully reviewed Cloudeater’s raw tracks and provided notes on which songs he thought would make a strong release. With most of the essential pieces in place, the band finished recording these songs and delivered them to Herren in New York for post-production work and mixing. The result of this collaboration with Prefuse 73 is Cloudeater’s expansive new album, Purge.

Opening with a cloudy soundscape, “Purge” sets the hazy atmosphere for the title track, which frames the existential limits of the physical body through images of an apocalyptic event. From there, tracks such as “Hedron” and “Hollow” pull the album further into this dystopian landscape with complex rhythm and psychedelic synths similar to something off Flying LotusUntil the Quiet Comes. Tracks such as “Lethal“, “Detection“, and “Shelter” use complex rhythm, effected bass, distorted guitars, atmospheric synths, and soaring vocals to create a dark and eerie record.
