On Smooth Sailing, NYC-based indiepop alchemist Julietta presents her most vulnerable project to date, sharing stories from her adolescence as an easily impressionable youth caught up with the allure of big city excesses that led to addiction and struggles with mental heath. While working to gain her sense of self, Julietta discovered her voice through writing songs as both a coping mechanism and a cathartic release. Her personal journey has culminated with Smooth Sailing, and her need to escape bleeds through every track.

She recorded the record’s opener, “Beach Break,” on a trip to Central America where, she told Interview magazine, she “needed some time to write, read, create, get lost with monkeys, and get beat up surfing.” “Runaway,” another of Julietta’s standout tracks, was inspired by a spur-of-the-moment trip to Italy. “Smooth Sailing reminds of where I’ve been and where I am going,” she says of the collection. “No matter what all the hardships and struggles may be now or may have been then, there is always going to be a light at the end of the tunnel… I have felt deep pain, struggled with addictions, and everyday learning how to love myself, but at the end I always make it out to some sort of happy place. It’s never too late, and it’s never over!”
