Fresh off their set at this year’s Lollapalooza, Chicago’s Makeshift Prodigy is ready to share their six-song EP with radio and embark on a 50 date US tour starting this fall, which will include 25 college dates. The EP’s six songs are emotionally packed, serving as an accurate overview of the variance inherent in Makeshift Prodigy. Lead singer Anthony Bagnara creates by bravely pouring every feeling and thought into each lyric, with the hope that the listener will find their own meaning in each song. “We’ll create it. It will have our meaning, but eventually it becomes the emotional property of a fan”. This idea of a communal experience applies to their live shows as well. During a time where their peers’ lives consists of steady jobs & inevitable marriage/kids, Makeshift Prodigy is looking to make a personal connection with people that believe in what they’re doing. Their philosophy and creative imagination is succinctly reflected on their new EP, Illuminate. After the spacey and building instrumental of the intro track, the EP lifts off with second track “Chasing Daylight”. Within the first notes, we are enveloped with soaring guitar, pounding drums, and a driving rhythm section. The music smoothly rises and falls onto atmospheric sound beds, leading to comparisons to bands that inhabit a similarly big but transcendent space like Muse. “A Way Out” explores the more expansive and emotive side of the group while “Some Kind of Miracle” is musically introspective and instantly catchy. Illuminate EP is just one part of the Makeshift Prodigy experience, catch them on tour this fall.
