Sis is the serendipitous, scary, and smooth combustion of Jenny Gillespie Mason, Rob Shelton, Carly Bond, Joseph Adamik, Andrew Maguire, and Jamie Riotto. The group began as a spontaneous shredding/sculpting session of songwriting and recording between former folkie Gillespie Mason – who came armed with her journals and a handful of rough compositions begun on an OP-1 synth – and Shelton, a longtime engineer at the Bay Area’s legendary Tiny Telephone Studios. Soul, pop, and experimentation all find credence in a raw yet thoughtfully woven sound the group creates, which incorporates traditional rock instruments alongside electronics, marimbas, and clarinets. The San Francisco-based group has set up shop squarely in the realms of full-hearted poeticism, formulating powerful images focused around feelings over themes, poetry over experience, and experimentation over genre. Debut album Euphorbia, due later this year from Native Cat Recordings, is an enigmatic and highly satisfying collusion of words and ideas.

The band has released two singles from the forthcoming LP, “Moonsail” and “My King Plays Bowie.” The former plays in sensuous R&B, recalling Sade and her contemporaries; the latter is outfitted with slippery synth lines, strings, and low-key vocal styling in an arcing, elegant exertion that is metrical and superbly unpredictable. “I really enjoy infusing the lyrics with weirdness,“ says Mason about her artistic process. “Interesting images, weird turns of phrase, or beautiful strange sounds coming together that you’d never have thought of before.”
