I just did back-to-back weekends of Coachella and Record Store Day. So much music consumption and appreciation! I made it to 9 different record stores here in L.A. on Saturday. Here’s a look at my Record Store Day treasures that I’m making my way through. I’ve had excellent first listens to The Flaming Lips, Lee Hazlewood, and Sacred Bones Todo Muere Volume 2. Animal Collective is next up in the queue.

The record is both ethereal and grounded, evoking a deep sense of introspection and blending narrative lyrics with one-take lead vocal performances, cinematic arrangements, rich soundscapes, and lush orchestration. Vollebekk – who self-produced and plays piano, guitar, bass, B3 organ, harmonica, accordion and Moog synthesizer – compiled an impressive supporting cast including drummer Jim Keltner, steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Rod Stewart), and bassist Shahzad Ismaily. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Tracy Chapman) and mastered by Greg Calbi.
