Ry Cooder’s “Election Special” on Election Week

With election season in its final week, there’s no better album to play as we decide who our president for the next four years will be than Election Special. Ry Cooder‘s latest album is as poignant and sharp as any of his other 15 solo albums. “Mutt Romney Blues” has been a favorite among stations, partly because of the video for it that went viral earlier this year, but stations have started picking up other songs from the album. “Kool-Aid” references the saying “drinking the kool-aid” as Cooder speaks to the politically misguided lower-middle class who support Republican tax cuts for the rich. The songs dark electric blues riff glides over a beat laid down by son Joachim. “Guantanamo” features cascading guitar and a stomping beat set to handclaps with Cooder singing about the misfortune of human depravity. Highlight the record this week!
