John Vanderslice Going For Adds

Dagger Beach, the new record from San Francisco songwriter John Vanderslice, arrives as his first self-released effort after releasing records through Dead Oceans and Barsuk. It delivers the same precise and carefully thought out sonics we know him for while moving with a deft lightness and fearless sense of exploration. During the early stages of writing, Vanderslice endured a break-up that indirectly inspired the record. It was not the heartache that yielded the songs on Dagger Beach, but the solitary hikes into the deep Northern California wilderness that came out of being left to himself. Surviving such drastic life shifts ultimately becomes liberating, and a sense of that is heard throughout the songs looser, weirder, and freer sound. Lead single, “Raw Wood”, exemplifies that with syncopated drums, fluttering piano chords and eerie back-up melodies that gently moves the song into Grizzly Bear territory. Check out the Rolling Stone premiere of “Raw Wood” here and download it below as it adds this Tuesday.
