Sam Amidon – NPR Music Video Premiere – On Tour

Sam Amidon comes from a family steeped in the folk tradition. Son of members of the Word of Mouth Chorus, Amidon was surrounded by folk music and practiced the musical tradition as a kid. On his new album, Amidon challenges the current definition of the genre by, oddly enough, exercising its original definition: popular music of the people. Bright Sunny South sits contemporary pop covers next to traditional hymns, injecting both with the best of what each has to offer. In the video for “As I Roved Out”, Amidon staggers through the forest, singing out random lyrical excerpts of standard folk songs.
