Originally released on K in 2001, The Glow Pt. 2 is The Microphones‘ most celebrated album. It was named Tiny Mix Tapes #5 Album of the 2000s,  Pitchfork’s #1 Album of 2001, and Pitchfork‘s #73 Album of the 2000s. While still keeping with their raw sound, The Microphones‘ third album seems almost larger than life, with Elverum‘s vocals bringing an element of vulnerability that makes it “about as human a record in memory”. The songs are threaded with a pulsing, hollowed echo that rises out of the loudest and quietest moments of the record. As different as these two moments are sonically, the result is equally striking in both respects and is the world that Elverum likes to work in. Recorded in Olympia, WA, The Microphones attempt to capture the visual beauty of the Northwest landscape, and successfully create a sound that is equally stunning. In their review of the album, Pitchfork recognizes The Microphones‘ ability to bring a much needed subtlety to the music of the time, as The Glow Pt. 2 “is shaped by Elvrum‘s unique sense of non-linear arrangement and space”. As the album ebbs and flows between moments of near silence and epic bursts of sound, constant “themes of flesh and blood, water and wood, and life and death permeate the record” in some of The Microphones‘ most powerful lyrics – making The Glow Pt. 2 the most revered of The Microphones‘ discography. This iconic record is a must-have! Re-packaged in 2007 by K, The Glow Pt. 2 will receive a 2xLP vinyl re-issue on July 9th, making it the fourth out of five The Microphones albums re-issued by P.W.
