New Music from KaiL Baxley

KaiL Baxley, the South Carolina native whose 2013 double EP Heatstroke/The Wind and the War was nominated by NPR as Album of the Year, presents an album of swinging and soulful swagger: A Light that Never Dies. The genre-bending LP features co-production from Eric Corne, whose recording credits include Lucinda Williams, Glen Campbell, Kim Deal, and John Mayall, and finds Baxley’s voice and guitar accompanied by strings, horns, and haunting female background vocals. Recorded on analog gear, the record has a sound of warmth and timelessness, which sounds a bit like Astral Weeks-era Van Morrison if percolated through a slow-burning r&b shuffle.

The album effortlessly melts sonic styles, from 50s crooning (“Tell the Falling Sun”), to country blues (“Owe”), to vintage 70s soul with gospel/blues flourishes (“The Ballad of Johnny”), to haunting slide-guitar atmospherics (“Chasing James Dean”), without losing the sight of Baxley’s deeply emotive vocals that transform from rock to gospel, often within the same measure. A Light that Never Dies is gorgeously moody throughout, exhibiting a hymnlike quality and depth of soul that is at once mysterious and inviting.
