Gary Clark Jr. Goes for Adds with “The Healing”

Austin’s guitar virtuoso Gary Clark Jr. has just announced the much-anticipated follow-up to his celebrated debut album, Blak & Blu. Set to arrive this September, Clark‘s sophomore LP, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, marks the evolution of an artist embracing his roots with a rarefied grace and an inextinguishable passion. Written, produced, and arranged by Clark himself, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim takes on a much more personal and earnest tone. “Sonny Boy Slim is me,” Clark says in the album trailer for his upcoming release. “The underlying tone of this album is faith and hope, ’cause that’s what we need.”

In advance of the release of The Story of Sonny Boy Slim this September, Clark has offered up a gospel inspired and guitar-reverberating single, “The Healing.” The track begins with a gritty and bare recording of a man singing a hymnal, before launching into Clark‘s signature soulful and multi-layered sound. Drawing from blues, rock, and gospel, “The Healing” incorporates hip-hop rhythms into the song’s infectious groove. After building a sound that is nothing short of awe-inspiring, Clark fittingly sings out, “This music is my healing… ‘Cause when this world upsets me, this music sets me free.”

“A spiritual, guitar-licked anthem that slinks along at its own mesmerizing pace… stuffed with some awe-inspiring writing.”

Blak and Blu is going to be hard to top, but if the rest of the new album is anywhere close to as good as ‘The Healing,’ then Clark will not only avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, he will obliterate it.”
