Gary Clark Jr. Enjoys Strong CMJ Chart Debut, is Reviewed by the AV Club, and Shreds on Conan

Gary Clark, Jr. is off to a good start at CMJ, debuting last week just shy of the Top 50 on the Radio 200 with his sophomore album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. The AV Club has a great review of the album, here, which contrasts it with Clark’s 2012 debut Blak and Blu. While the new album still has a considerable blues influence, the review says, “the overall sound is far more informed by ’70s funk and soul” and Clark even shows a “previously unrecognized psychedelic side” of which “Kevin Parker of Tame Impala would approve” on album closer “Down to Ride.”

Last week, Clark and his band visited Conan O’Brien to perform a scorching rendition of Sonny Boy Slim lead single “The Healing.” Guitar fans will definitely want to check the video out, for it includes some incredible shredding by Clark on his Gibson SG. According to Conan, his playing is “amazing.” Check it out here. Give GCJ a push on your chart this week!
