Young Empires Share “Sunshine,” Talk to Vocalo’s Morning App, Play CMJ Parties

On the Gates, Toronto’s Young Empires worked with producer Stephen Kozmeniuk, known for working with Kendrick Lamar and Madonna, who pushed the band’s sound into something bigger and more universal than we heard on 2012 debut EP Wake All My Youth. According to Confront Magazine, which featured the single “Sunshine” recently, the result of this collaboration is music that “has an addictive, fun appeal to anyone who listens… You can’t help but want to move to the beat.” Listen here.

The band did a phone interview a couple of weeks ago with Jesse Menendez of Vocalo for an in depth conversation that examines the band’s three-way writing process and its life on the road. Menendez did an admirable job of convincing bassist Jacob Palahnuk to drop his reluctance about talking about what epic songs like “the Gates” mean. Interspersed with audio from the album, the interview is a must-listen for anyone who has been entranced by the band’s sound. Check it out below.
