Kathryn Calder Performs for the National Post

Grief has unfortunately been a common theme in Kathryn Calder‘s recent life. The New Pornographers member has lost both of her parents in the past few years, and she hasn’t shied away from dealing with themes of loss and mourning on her three solo albums. She discussed these tragedies, and how they informed her third, eponymous album that was released this spring, in a recent interview with the National Post. “I consider my songs contemplative,” she told the Post, “but I don’t consider them negative, even though they’re about sad things. I try to keep them positive because sadness and grief are part of life. So to pretend that doesn’t exist isn’t good but also being too dark isn’t good either so I try to find a balance.”

The Post has an exclusive performance from Calder and her band of one of those songs, “Blue Skies,” as well as a cover of Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.” Watch the videos below, and read the interview, here.
