New music from Futurebirds – “Rodeo” and “Midnight” – Digital Servicing Only

Hotel Parties, the latest LP from Athens, GA’s Futurebirds, has been hailed by Relix magazine as the band’s “most timeless and cohesive release to date.” Recorded by Drew Vandenberg (Of Montreal, Kishi Bashi, Deerhunter) and mixed by Brian Paulson (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), the album expands the band’s blend of psychedelic country rock while exploring lyrical themes related to the trials and tribulations of living on the road. “It’s a moment of clarity,” says Daniel Womack, who along with Carter King and Thomas Johnson is one of the band’s singers, “coming to realize that something you love has its drawbacks and understanding that is part of it and you’ve got to keep going.”

On “Rodeo,” one of the LP’s standout tracks, Womack succinctly captures the album’s concept by likening the band’s pursuit of its musical vision to a torrid and volatile romance: “We’ve turned our love into a rodeo, but [I’m] gonna grab the bull by the horns.” This digital servicing also includes a live version of the song, recorded at the legendary Georgia Theater in Athens. Rounding out this digital servicing is the band’s cover of Ray Charles‘ “Midnight,” a song penned by fellow Georgians Chet Atkins and Boudleaux Bryant that Futurebirds recorded for the Oxford American‘s Georgia Music Issue last year with the help of Marcus Tenney (Bon Iver, Natalie PrassMatthew E. White) on horns. According to the magazine, the song is washed in “a lovely psychedelic haze” and “bridges the brassy r&b of Ray Charles with the twang of Red Foley and Porter Wagoner’s country western originals.”

“Futurebirds… have distilled all the best parts of Southern rock into their own slow-burning, glimmering sound.” – Stereogum

“[Hotel Parties is] a fine-tuned masterpiece loaded with well-written songs that take listeners on a ride through luscious soundscapes surrounded by fuzz-filled guitars… One of the best records of 2015.” – The Examiner
