Futurebirds Share “Midnight,” Return to the Road

Futurebirds, who are back on tour after a short winter break, recently turned in a cover of Ray Charles‘ “Midnight” for the Oxford American – a legendary magazine that has been documenting the complexity and vitality of the American South since 1992. For their Georgia Music Issue, the magazine commissioned a cover of the Chet Atkins-penned tune. In turn, Futurebirds enlisted Marcus Tenney (Bon Iver, Natalie Prass, Matthew E. White) to play dirgy horns and crafted a warm and hazy version that, according to the Oxford American, “bridges the brassy r&b of Ray Charles with the twang of Red Foley and Porter Wagoner’s country western originals.” A recently posted video from the band shows them laying down the track at Montrose Recording in Richmond, Virginia, and can be seen below.
