Rokia Traoré, #1 at New World, Releases New Video After Being Honored by the UN

Rokia Traoré has been atop the CMJ New World chart for the past two weeks, but that’s not the only honor that has been bestowed upon the Malian musician and activist. On March 20, she was named a Regional Goodwill Ambassador for West and Central Africa by UNHCR, the agency within the UN that is tasked with addressing the many refugee crises around the globe. Traoré, whose home country has been embroiled in a civil war since 2012, has been working with UNHCR for several years now. “I have witnessed thousands of displaced people… who have been forced to leave behind their homes, their families and everything they know”, she says. “They are not alone. As the world continues to witness record numbers of people forcibly displaced by war and conflict, I am grateful to be able to play a part in spotlighting this unprecedented refugee crisis as a Goodwill Ambassador.”

Traoré’s advocacy extends to her art, as the refugee issue is the principle theme of her stunning new LP Né So. To recognize her new post with UNHCR, she’s released a video of the title track, which means “home” in her native Bambara language. Watch it here or below:
