Beatique Rates Jeffrey Runnings’ Piqued As “A Beautiful Final Solo Album”

According to Beatique, the posthumous LP Piqued from For Against’s Jeffrey Runnings is “a beautiful final solo album… both a testament to Runnings’ creativity and a loving tribute to the musician.” The review notes, “There’s an eclecticism to the album. ‘Batman Forever,’ which opens the album and is one of few vocal tracks on Piqued, is melancholic dreampop and is immediately followed by the energetic space rock of ‘Just Before Nothing’ and ‘Threadbare.’ Meanwhile, ‘Mayfair’ has the feel of a new wave slow jam, the sort of song that you might hear during the dramatic school dance climax of a John Hughes movie, and ‘Heretofore’ juxtaposes a dark, post-punk guitar with lighter vocals. The album proper closes with ‘Elegy,’ a lush instrumental that reminds the listener of the circumstances behind this album.”
