Join The Louder Than You Think Listening Party On January 28
The soundtrack for the SXSW-award-winning documentary Louder Than You Think: a Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement is out on Friday, January 30 via Independent Project Records. Join IPR on Wednesday January 28 at 5pm PST for their next Bandcamp listening party, where you’ll be able to chat along with Pavement’s Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) and film producer/IPR co-owner/longtime Gary Young friend Jeffrey Clark. RSVP for the listening party here.
The album features rare and never-before-heard tracks from the overlooked Stockton music scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s, as seen through the lens of the LSD and alcohol-fueled hippie who helped define the sound of all things lo-fi, indie rock and slacker in between headstands, including bands like Fall of Christianity (the Stockton rebels that struck a chord with a teenage Spiral Stairs), CRLLL, The Authorities, Gary Young’s Hospital, and Hot Spit Dancers. The album also includes tracks scored for the film from Edward W. Dahl (Jodorowsky’s Dune) and Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Cate Le Bon). Two singles – “Please Be Happy (For Us),” a final Gary original with some magic courtesy of his old friends Spiral Stairs and Stephen Malkmus, and the previously unreleased Pavement scorcher “Summer Babe (Live May 19, 1992)” – are at radio now.
