Norman Records Loves Woo’s New Reissue

Norman Records highlighted Woo‘s Whichever Way You Are Going, You Are Going Wrong, at radio now from Independent Project Records, as its Reissue of the Week for January 12. They write, “It’s been said before that one of the reasons Woo’s music is so hushed and intimate was because they recorded through the night in a small flat mindful of not waking the neighbours. Certainly it could be said that their sound flowered out of necessity, but it also fitted neatly into the quieter music that started to appear in the late 1970s and early ’80s. In 1980 we had the exquisitely minimal The Durutti Column debut The Return of The Durutti Column and later that same year Young Marble Giants released the astonishingly quiet Colossal Youth. Sitting somewhere between these two records is Woo’s debut. Unlike those other two albums however, it blended a surprisingly large array of instruments including guitars, bass, synthesiser, saxophone, and clarinet. What resulted from their late night sessions was an organic and unpredictable set of mostly instrumentals that drew from a wider-than-usual array of influences.” Here‘s the review.
