Back in May, The Alternative Press included Simon Doom‘s MGMT-produced single “I Feel Unloved’ – which has a bizarre music video directed by VICE’s Nick Gazin and starring Doom along with fellow musician Anni Rossi – on a list of songs “you need to hear.” The song, which opens Doom’s new Babyman LP, is a stunningly catchy summer jam with Strokes-esque vocals and jangly guitars.

The record is both ethereal and grounded, evoking a deep sense of introspection and blending narrative lyrics with one-take lead vocal performances, cinematic arrangements, rich soundscapes, and lush orchestration. Vollebekk – who self-produced and plays piano, guitar, bass, B3 organ, harmonica, accordion and Moog synthesizer – compiled an impressive supporting cast including drummer Jim Keltner, steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Rod Stewart), and bassist Shahzad Ismaily. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Tracy Chapman) and mastered by Greg Calbi.
