Dren McDonald Discusses Grief With Canadian Beats

Vox Pterous, the new album from Dren McDonald, is a response to grief. The musician tells Canadian Beats, “This is one reason this record took a long time. It often took several weeks to do one song, working a few hours a night on lyrics, to come up with something that felt right. I’d look through emails with [someone close to me I’d lost], or find old photos to spark ideas/memories. Some nights resulted in writing only one or two words. Progress is progress though. Sometimes the best that I could do would be to paint little scenes of my memories with these folks, scenes that they’d remember about our time together. It may not be significant to others, or even make sense, but it felt right.”
