New Music From LoveyDove

LoveyDove is the psychedelic pop duo of Azalia Snail and Dan West, two prolific musicians whose diverse discographies combine to span more than 40 albums. A pioneering figure in the American underground music scene, Snail is known for her adventurous, DIY approach to songwriting and recording and has most recently been seen on instrumental albums POWERLOVER and Gentle Mental. West, who also records as d’Animal and has collaborated with everyone from Rosemary Clooney to El Vez, is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and producer whose musical background encompasses everything from jazz and orchestral composition to garage rock and pop. Partners in music and life, the two have been making music together as LoveyDove since 2011, combining Snail’s experimental instincts and psychedelic sensibilities with West’s sophisticated arrangements and gift for melody.

On their new album, Light It Up!, LoveyDove channel their eclectic musical backgrounds into a colorful, energetic collection of genre-bending songs. Yet, beneath the album’s infectious hooks and playful arrangements lies a serious engagement with the political turmoil, social injustice, and general unease of living in today’s America. The pointed “You Got to Be Kidding!” confronts the state of the world head-on, while the anthemic “PTT (Presenting the Truth)” features some words of wisdom from legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke. Elsewhere, “Move Me” delivers a burst of high-energy garage rock. Throughout Light It Up!, LoveyDove balance frustration with optimism, using humor, imagination, and exuberant pop songwriting to find moments of joy and possibility amid the chaos.
