Flying Lessons

Fool’s Gold returns with Flying Lessons, the colorful, confident, and ebullient follow up to their 2011 sophomore LP Leave No Trace. That album earned the band rave reviews from Pitchfork, SPIN, and NPR and led to tour dates around the world. The five-piece, created in 2007 by Luke Top (bass/vocals) and Lewis Pesacov (lead guitar) and inspired by its founders’ mutual love of African music and dance beats, made a conscious decision with this album to move forward by creating and projecting positivity, peace, and love to counteract and help balance the struggles of life. Flying Lessons joyously captures the self-awareness of a tight knit group that’s been together through thick and thin, experiencing growth and milestones both communal and individual.

Upbeat openers “I’m In Love” and “Lady of the Lake” set the pace with grooving percussion and fluid, upbeat guitar, while tracks like “Wildflower”, which sounds like The Beach Boys might have sounded had they come from the Caribbean instead of Hawthorne, and Hebrew-language rocker “Ta’alumah” demonstrate the band’s breadth and sonic flexibility. Throughout the LP, Fool’s Gold applies an engaging, effervescent, and infectious energy to its worldly and addictively catchy sound.

“The LA-based collective weaves Western pop aesthetics with African rhythms and melodies in a wholly compelling and distinctive fashion”.
-KCRW

“The album’s debut single, “I’m In Love”, features many of the elements that made us fall for them in the first place: Top’s Morrissey-esque voice, the band’s whimsical percussion, and their ability to combine a bundle of instruments and sounds into one solid, upbeat unit”.
