Kate Pierson_Guitars and Microphones_Album CoverKate Pierson, iconic voice and founding member of the punk, genre-defying band The B-52s, has announced her debut solo record Guitars and Microphones. With friend Sia as executive producer, Pierson worked with variety of other songwriters including Chris Braide (Lana Del Rey) & The Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi, who also contributed guitar to a batch of songs. The result is a record that harkens to the Surrealism, lurid sci-fi, forbidden dance party music that The B-52s became popular for decades ago, but that sounds in tune with the now. As Noisey puts it, “If Kate booted Jules out of the way and started fronting The Strokes, this is the music they’d make.” Pierson’s soaring emotive vocals on “Mister Sister“ make it a poetic love letter of the power of transformation. The “Mister Sister” music video features Fred Armisen (Portlandia, SNL) and premiered on Pitchfork last month. Lyrically, the record is made up of poetic explorations of serious human emotion. But at the same time this is true pop, it is humanism and feminism out for a real good time.

Guitars and Microphones was mastered by Emily Lazar (The Julie Ruin, Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend, HAIM, Cults, Chromeo) & produced by Tim Anderson (Banks, Low).

“…Pierson’s signature sound with a modern sheen; given that so much current music hearkens back to the B-52s’ ’80s heyday, it’s interesting to see her style boomerang around like this.”
