Since making her debut by winning several provincial singing competitions in the early 2000s, Léonie Gray has had a long and varied career that has included a lead role in the musical Symbiose; opening slots for well-known artists including Beyries, France d’Amour, Karim Ouellet, Milk & Bones, and Morcheeba; performances at the Montréal International Jazz Festival, at Mtélus, on the CBC Stage and at the Santa-Térésa Festival, and at The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. With her rich voice and authentic approach, Gray remains true to her influences on new LP self ish and delivers a solid sophomore pop album with retro accents. An artist with a unique musical signature, Gray handles vintage sounds with astonishing ardor, while retaining a contemporary touch. The record was co-produced by Gray and her long-time accomplice, Tom Lapointe.
The highly personal lyrics explore relationship dynamics. Her passion for music is a way for her to free herself and grow. Focusing on themes such as mental health, feminism, interpersonal relationships, and self-fulfillment, Gray likes to contrast introspective subjects with light, upbeat music. Self ish, she says, is the result of “the journey to cultivate self-love and self-acceptance. Pursuing the discovery of my true self has been my greatest challenge but also my greatest inspiration for this project.”
