A figure in the West Coast music scene for more than two decades, Max Foreman is best known for his keyboard and vocal work in the electric pop duo Bouquet and as guitarist of the San Francisco math rock trio Tenebre. He has performed on bills with the likes of Fiona Apple, Ariel Pink, Geneva Jacuzzi, Michael Hurley, Calvin Johnson, Devendra Banhart, Will Oldham and others, bringing songs that employ experimental synthesizers and guitars to make immersive, unusual songs with acerbic lyrics.
The lyrics on Foreman’s new release, Serious Business, tell the story of the social fabric in a terrifying state of breach, trapped in the thrall of narcissism, scam culture, self-destruction, and the ethos of making it through this world by cheating and lying. The music tells something different. Each song verges into new territory, from the experimentalist death funk of “MLM,” to the counterintuitive melodic dance of “Kill or Be Killed,” to the title track, “Serious Business,” with its anthemic pulse, brimming with soulful organs and strings and loaded with killer hooks.
