The Microphones came out of Olympia, Washington, bringing a unique lo-fi sound to the then-grungey Northwest. Phil Elverum and Co. produced five highly acclaimed studio albums with K under the name of The Microphones, including The Glow Pt. 2, which was named Pitchfork’s Album of the Year in 2001 and one of the top 5 albums of the decade by Tiny Mix Tapes. Recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios, The Microphones‘ albums are known for their highly detailed production and beautiful songwriting. Tracks such as “The Pull” and “The Sun” constantly switch between the left and right channels to create a textured sound, while tracks such as “Mount Eerie” and “I Felt Your Shape” showcase Elverum‘s powerful lyricism. Some of The Microphones‘ tracks, like the 11-minute “The Glow”, are masterpieces within themselves, with The Microphones’ complex rhythms, dynamic shifts, and reverb-drenched sound. They have not produced a new album under The Microphones since they switched to the moniker Mount Eerie in 2004, but are now reissuing all five albums including Don’t Wake Me Up; It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water; The Glow Pt. 2; Mount Eerie and the b-sides/rarities/singles compilation, Song Islands, which would make it the first time Song Islands has been pressed to vinyl. With a discography of distorted psychedelic pop that spans from 1997-2003, these reissues are a must-have! We have digital copies of all five albums; let us know if you would like to receive a copy of any of them. Read more about the reissues here and when reporting one of these classic reissues as a top add to CMJ this week, list the album as Reissues.
