Pitchfork Digs American Head

Pitchfork approves of the new Flaming Lips album, outlining the story-conceit at the heart of the record (something about Wayne Coyne imagining himself jamming with a pre-fame Tom Petty as he passed through Oklahoma on his way to LA from Florida) before writing that it’s “really just a roundabout way of getting the Lips back to where they were in the ‘90s. American Head retains some of the symphonic sweep of the Soft Bulletin era and the freaky futurism of their post-Embryonic state, but, at its core, we find the band rekindling their past romance with Neil Young’s piano ballads, the Beatles’ psychedelic guitar tones, and David Bowie’s stargazing anthems.” Read the full review here.

American Head is at radio now.
