Sunny War Lands On Year-End Lists
Sunny War’s breakthrough album Anarchist Gospel was a huge radio hit this year, topping the NACC Folk chart for several weeks and getting close to the top of the NACC Top 200 and NACC R&B charts. It’s no surprise that the record is now popping up on a lot of year-end lists, including the ones made by Louder Than War, Iowa Source, Uncut, The Portland Radio Project, and Folk Punk Archivist.
According to PopMatters, which ranked Anarchist Gospel among its favorite albums of 2023, “As the oxymoronic album title suggests, Sunny War’s latest album is full of paradoxes. The blues, folk, country, punk, and rock artist finds that uncertainty in life is what gives living its flavor. The contradictions between what is meaningful and what is hopeless coexist… There is a powerful directness in her music. The album was produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff), who purposely accentuates the spaciousness of the sonics. Anarchist Gospel never sounds forced or hurried.” See their full list here.
