New Music From Daskal

On Obsidian (Selected Dance Scores), Raw Tapes artist Daskal has compiled his best work into one gorgeous, meditative ambient masterpiece – giving new life to compositions originally written to score performances by the Los Angeles Dance Project, Royal Danish Ballet, Batsheva Dance Company, and more. “As an album, the music tells a new story,” A story of my own inner world,” says Daskal. Obsidian is dedicated to the choreographers who inspired him; and it’s a stunning oasis of calm for listeners.

“Alex,” the first single from the album, is a hushed, piano-led waltz that is gentle, inviting, and delicate. But beneath his melody lurks something darker, as synthesizers sound off with a foreboding collective quiver. “Alex” is a musical beginning, the composition floating like morning mist and swirling like fresh snowfall. “Hsin-Yi,” the second single, was originally composed for a dance performance choreographed by Omri Drumlevich. Daskal was so rapt by Taiwanese dancer Hsin-Yi Hsiang that he named his piece after her. The song blooms slowly, layer by layer like a flower, unfolding around a dreamy keyboard melody.
