New Music From Dennis Coffey
Detroit’s legendary Westbound Records has teamed with vinyl specialist label Org Music to re-launch with a series of remastered, celebrated funk and soul albums. Next up is Dennis Coffey’s long overdue reissue of his 1975 funk guitar treasure, Finger Pickin Good (retitled from Finger Lickin Good). Remastered by Dave Gardner, the album includes the previously unissued bonus song “What It Is It Ain’t.” The record is a tour de force in funky guitar wizardry unlike anything else.
Featured in the film Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Coffey has performed on a number of Motown recordings, including The Temptations’ “Cloud Nine,” “Ball of Confusion,” and “Just My Imagination,” Edwin Starr’s “War,” and “Band of Gold” by Freda Payne. He also was a sideman for George Clinton, Funkadelic and Del Shannon, and he continues to make music.
“The album marks some of the shift in Coffey’s role on the Detroit soul scene as the decade moved on — as it features close collaboration with longtime musical partner Mike Theodore, who was helping the scene move past 60s soul into the world of 70s club — a style that’s showcased very heavily here with all sorts of fantastic rhythms, and even backing female vocals that provide a soulful addition to Coffey’s work on guitar!” – Dusty Groove
