Vancouver Weekly Asks Fruit Bats About Process

Vancouver Weekly recently spoke to Fruit Bats’ Eric D. Johnson about the process that led him to create his last two LPs. “The Landfill and its predecessor,” he says, “were both written and recorded in, I think, essentially 12 weeks’ time. Both of those were much more of a thing of just sitting down and writing. I never like to set a mandate, and I’m not ever doing exercises. I don’t like setting up too many rules for myself. But it was much different than the collage process in the sense that these were all built from the ground up, very much in the moment. Not from spare parts. I make it sound like everything’s just made out of junk, and that’s not true. Someone asked me about morning pages at some point with this. I wouldn’t necessarily say I was doing that, but these records are much more journalistic, the last couple.”

Check out the whole feature here; the Landfill is at radio now from Merge Records!
