On their self-titled debut album, Vancouver’s hardcore five-piece NEEDS presents a grown-up soundtrack to teen angst by tackling destruction, emotion, and the current state of the world in a way that is as raw and heavy yet stylized and self-aware. NEEDS is a crusty punk teen garage band that never gave up but never stopped growing up. Menacing and melodic, intelligent yet terrifying, the songs are forceful but the album stands as an evolved and deliberate work that is the product of practice and life experience as the band members developed their teen aggressions into adult assertions.
The album marks the third time the band has worked with producer Jordan Koop. Unlike the previous sessions which were recorded live, the band focused on slowing down, polishing, and enhancing every song on its own. The resulting record, mastered by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering (Viet Cong, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear), kneels before fuzz and distortion to take listeners on a ten song journey through suburban doldrums, urban renewal, the idiocy of punk music, a smoke break, decay, and despair.

“I love this band. For its chaotic, full-throttle rock. For its world view — a mix of sweet idealism and brooding cynicism — and for its self-deprecating sense of humor.”
“There’s something invigorating about this band that’s difficult to convey without listening to them—it’s a genuineness that most punk bands have abandoned today in favor of paint-by-numbers tropes.”
