“Sure, name checking a band as the West Coast heir apparent to Big Star is a bold statement, brave in fact, but that’s exactly how I’ve been hailing The World Record of late”.
– Aquarium Drunkard

Back in 2003, Andy Creighton, the creative force behind The World Record, found himself in an array of burgeoning mid-2000s darlings – Merge’sApex Manor, Sub-Pop’s Papercuts, and Secretly Canadian’s Foreign Born. In between bands, Andywould work on his solo project, which he began circulating in the form of a CD-R among friends. In a matter of time, Andy began playing out The World Record with the help of friends from The Broken WestWildcat! Wildcat! The Parson Redheads,Dashboard Confessional, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. With his own project, Andy wanted to make sure that The World Record held up to the songwriting and production integrity he admired from artists like Alex Chilton and Robyn Hitchcock. After the release of Guitars Forever in 2006, he took to the studio and six years later presented Freeway Specialalong with its accompanying EP, Come On Summer. The two releases are very much alike – both are straightforward power pop records with enough jangle and sunny melodies to balance it with Western and English influences. The EP starts with the self-titled track and serves as a plea for a break from the bitter winter & has a proto-punk brattiness that is softened with big hooks and ringing guitar chords. Andy lets“VIP600” subtly unravel into 90’s college rock bliss. A sputtering beat dances around the verses’ melody and an oscillating farfisa bridges the song’s choruses. The five songs on the EP were produced with the intent on creating something with longevity, a different approach compared to today’s fast-paced, sometimes diluted, attitude.
