Detroit’s legendary Westbound Records has teamed with vinyl specialist label Org Music to re-launch with a series of remastered, celebrated funk and soul albums. Founded in 1968 by Armen Boladian, Westbound proved to the world that thrilling sounds were still coming from Detroit, after Motown left the city. From humble beginnings, this important independent label soon grew to be a powerhouse that influenced music worldwide. Next up is one of the rarest and brightest jewels in the Westbound crown.
In 1971, after dropping “Fabulous” from their moniker, The Counts delivered their first full-length platter for Westbound. What’s Up Front That-Counts is indisputably one of the funkiest albums of all time, with its conga-led grooves, impassioned vocals and strutting in-the-pocket arrangements. Sampled by Queen Latifa (“Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children”) and Eric B. & Rakim (“Relax With Pep”), this seminal, forward-thinking album is an indispensable soundtrack predicting the decade that followed. The reissue includes three previously-unreleased bonus songs.
